Natural Nail Fungus Remedies

Having nail fungus can be embarrassing. Although it may seem like a mild infection during its early stages, it can still cause minor discomfort, with visible symptoms being the discoloration of toe nails. If you have fungal infection in your nails, it is advisable to have it checked by a doctor and treated immediately. For mild cases, you can try natural methods to cure fungal infections on the nails. Here are some home remedies.

Soak Infected Nails in Vinegar

A lot of people have proven this method effective in treating mild nail fungal infection. It is recommended to soak the infected nails on vinegar for at least twenty (20) minutes per day for two (2) weeks prior to seeing any real nail clearing. The only problem with this natural cure is it won't treat heavy nail fungal infections as vinegar has not enough power to reach the root of infection.

Listerine Mouthwash Foot Baths

Listerine is a powerful antiseptic mouthwash. It is also being used by some people in curing nail fungus since it is cheaper than prescription drugs. Eucalyptol, Salicylate and Thymol are some of the main ingredients of Listerine that are believed to cure fungal infections in the nails. The treatment method using this agent is to soak the affected nail in undiluted Listerine for around 30 minutes a day for one to two weeks.

Bleach Toenail Fungus Treatment

Luckily, you can use bleach in treating toenail fungus. You can do this by diluting the bleach in water and applying it to the infected nails. Make sure to cut your nails first before you apply the bleach solution so you can expose the fungus more to the bleach. Suggested method for this is adding part bleach to around 100 parts of water in a bucket. Soak your feet for 30 minutes at least once a week. For severe cases, it is advisable to soak the infected nails to the bleach solution for 15 to 20 minutes a day for 2 to 3 months.

Application of Essential Oils

Applying oregano oil, tea tree oil and other essential oils on the affected area can help significantly in the early stages of nail fungal infection. Simply apply the essential oil and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes daily until you see improvements in your nails. This home remedy, however, is no substitute for medical cures as the outcome differ greatly.

While the effectiveness of the suggested natural nail fungus remedies varies from person to person, all of these generally do not have side effects. For fast cure, it would be a good idea to employ a combination of nail fungal infection home remedies and medical treatments.

All of these remedies are very helpful. Another option is using Funginix [http://funginix.net/]. It's a topical solution you apply to the infected nail. To learn more about Funginix [http://funginix.net/] visit my website.

Toenail fungus is common and can make toes appear deformed. The nails become discolored, soft and peel easily which can make you lose the nail eventually. There are many ways to treat this condition and you can choose to go for prescription drugs or natural remedies. You can also go for laser treatment which has been found to be very effective.

Toenail Fungus Treatment Selection

Toenail Fungus Treatments Are Recommended

Your doctor will help you decide which of the many treatments of toenail fungus that you should use. If the fungal infection is causing no problems or discomfort, most doctors will give their patients the choice of whether or not to treat it at all. It is important, however, to remember that just because a nail fungus isn't causing you trouble right now doesn't mean that it won't in the future. Fungal infections are progressive and capable of causing permanent damage to toenails. Not only that, most toenail fungi are highly contagious and can easily spread to other toenails - even other people! Patients with other health issues that have the potential of damaging the feet and legs, such as diabetes, will be advised to treat even the most minor infections.

Even if you elect to use a nail fungus treatments, the success rate can be rather disappointing. Most treatments only have a 75-80% chance of working. The best way to increase your chances of success is to begin treating early on in the infection.

Common Toenail Fungus Treatments

Here are a few of the most common toe fungus treatments available. Do your homework on each one covered and discuss them with your doctor.

• Antifungal Pills - Your doctor is likely to prescribe antifungal pills if your infection is advanced. Pills are also used in cases where the fungus is not responding to other forms of toenail treatments. Your doctor will want to see you frequently during this treatment to monitor your overall health.
• Topical Antifungal Treatments - Topical treatments usually come in the form of a lotion or salve that is applied to the infected area. These toenail fungus treatments are most likely to help those who have mild infections.
• Surgical Toenail Removal - The only way to get rid of some infections is to remove the infected toenails completely. Although this is a rather drastic measure, it is effective in preventing the spread of the infection.

Selecting A Toenail Fungus Treatment

It is very important to get an official diagnosis before beginning any treatments. Some health problems can be mistaken for toenail fungus, but your doctor will be able to tell the difference between them. Be sure to include your doctor in your treatment selection process even if you plan to try home remedies before prescription toenail fungus treatments.

You will have to use patience no matter which toenail fungus treatment you decide to use. This condition is often difficult to treat and takes a long time to clear up completely. Even after the fungus has cleared up it can take as long as a year or more for your toenails to regenerate completely. Severe fungal infections can even cause permanent damage to your toenails, but once the fungus is gone the toenail degeneration will stop. Don't give up hope; if you are diligent in your toenail fungus treatments you have a good chance of growing new healthy toenails once again!

Toenail Fungus Treatment With the Acidophilis Beer Soak

This natural toenail fungus treatment information came to me via a professor of mine during our medical procedures course. I am passing it on to you in hopes that people try this first before resorting to the toxic effects of Lamisil.

Please also be aware of claims stating that a product will cure or treat toenail fungus in a few days or a couple weeks. From my clinical experience, that is not possible. It takes a few months for a nail to grow out and even up to 6 full months. Nail fungus resides underneath the nail and a product has to penetrate deeply to get to it and then the nail must grow out before it looks healthy. So - be careful of false claims. There are many.

Acidophilus Beer Soak:

The basic premise behind this odd sounding natural toenail fungus treatment is to soften the nail with the beer, create an acidic environment with vinegar which is beneficial to good bacteria and deadly to fungus and then penetrate the nails with beneficial bacteria to help kill and prevent further recurrences.

Essential Ingredients:

  • Acidophilus sachets containing 125 billion organisms
  • Guinness Stout beer or any other dark beer.
  • White Vinegar
  • Basin big enough for your feet or hands
  • Time
  • Persistence and Consistency

Natural Toenail Fungus Treatment Procedure:

  • In tub, pour 1 liter of room temperature beer into a basin
  • Add 60 billion acidophilus which is half of one sachet.
  • Add 1 liter of White vinegar
  • Soak clean feet in the solution for 30 minutes before bed or when best for you.
  • On removing your feet or fingernails from the basin, file the nails down with a pumice stone or file. Do this once per week. Wash your hands well afterwards to avoid contamination of fungus to your fingernails. Also place your feet back into the bin for about a minute or more to rinse off the filings.
  • After each 3rd day, toss out the entire solution mixture and remake using the formula: 1 liter of white vinegar, 1 liter of dark beer and the remaining half of one sachet. This keeps the solution's ingredients in active live form. If too old, it will not work.
  • Repeat for 30 days every day. Do not skip a day for best results.
  • Do twice a day for faster results
  • You may warm the solution by adding boiling water to the mix before using

What to look for: As the fungus gets killed by this natural toenail fungus treatment, you will notice that the new nail growth from the nail base is coming in clear. This is a good sign. Some people see clearing at the base within one week and some people see clearing at the base in one month. It all depends on how fast your nails grow and how often you soak them.

It will take about 3 months for the infected nails to completely grow out. As long as you keep seeing the nail base come in clean and grow out cleanly, you are on the right track.

If your feet get sensitive or sore, do the soak only once per day. Some people have sensitive skin while others do not. Simply put on some great liquid vitamin E or aloe on the sore areas should they occur. This is rare.

Make sure you do this toenail fungus treatment daily. Make it a routine. Watch some TV, read a book or wash the dishes for 30 minutes. Do not skip a day. If you do, it may take a bit longer than a month but keep at it.

If you know your nails grow slowly, then consider purchasing some MSM or Silicea 6x cell salts as they have shown to increase nail growth. If you find yourself having gas after taking MSM or eating garlic or headaches after red wine, then that is typically a sign of molybdenum deficiency. You can get molybdenum at a health food store. Liquid molybdenum is ideal as it absorbs better.

This anti-fungus protocol is an excellent way to help prevent liver damage via Lamisil. Mind you, not all people are affected badly by Lamisil. However, the FDA did put out an advisory for physicians: "Both Sporanox® and Lamisil® have been associated with serious hepatic toxicity, including liver failure and death, including some cases involving patients who had neither pre-existing liver disease nor a serious underlying medical condition. As of April 2001, the FDA is aware of 16 cases of liver failure in association with Lamisil® Tablet use (including 11 deaths and two liver transplantations). These patients received Lamisil® Tablets for the treatment of various dermatologic conditions, including onychomycosis."

If the formula is not strong enough, play with it. Perhaps add some more acidophilis to the mix or more vinegar - or more beer. Play with the concentrations.

If you've any questions, I'm happy to answer them for you.

You may find the Acidophilus Sachets here along with other related useful products for the Beer Soak protocol.

I estimated the total cost of this procedure to be about $200.00 That is very inexpensive compared to Lamisil - and much healthier to your liver.

Even if you drink a couple Guinness Stouts while you do the soak - it may still be safer than Lamisil on your liver. :)

Toenail Fungus Infection - 7 Myths of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus infection is not only is it unsightly but it is also a health problem. People who are new to this or even a sufferer for years may overlook the seriousness and other consequences it can cause to their lives. As toenail is more common than fingernail, I will mention mainly the toenails. So, here is 7 myths of toenail fungus illustrated to help you with a better understanding of this type of infection.

1. Nail fungus infection is not serious
Nail fungus infection must not be taken lightly as it can damage the entire nail permanently, spreading to other areas as well as infecting other people, pose serious health issues to people with diabetes and other low immunities to fungus attack if left untreated. This can make the treatment very challenging and much longer time to recover. For extreme cases, the nail damage is permanent.

2. It won't happen again
Those who have recover from earlier toenail fungus infection must not be complacent about their past experience. Toenail fungus problem can recur. As these tiny microscopic organisms are invisible to the naked eye, they are also infectious. One must always observe personal hygiene for long term recovery and preventing it from happening again.

3. The nail will heal itself without treatment
When toenail fungus started to grow underneath your nails, and you noticed symptoms of yellowish or greenish nail, you must seek treatment quickly. The fungus can grow and spread to other nails and destroying the nails faster than the nail will grow and heal. It is not worth taking chances and ignoring the seriousness of this infection.

4. Nail fungus can be cured quickly
This depends on the severity of the problem and how badly it has infected the nails. As toenail fungus breed underneath the nail on the nail bed, it is not easy to penetrate to reach the nail bed to eliminate the fungus. Killing the fungus is half of the battle as it can take months for the nail to grow back to healthy state and it also takes certain amount of effort for habitual change in lifestyle if an individual are so used to the old bad habits.

5. Using oral medication is the best solution
For serious case of toenail fungus, one may prefer to opt for this approach. But, oral medication is not without their drawbacks. It can include side effects such as headache, upset stomach, allergic reactions like skin rashes to ingredients in the medication, and it can even affect the liver and may result in heart complications. You should buy off the shelf oral medication without consulting your doctor.

6. Home Remedies Will Work For Anyone
There are claims that natural oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil and others cure their toenail fungus problems but these remain unverified and unproven. There are certain group of people are allergic to tea tree and applying too much can irritate the skin. Using natural means is usually the more preferred approach nowadays and virtually no side effects but without sufficient scientific research and proper formulation it would not be as effective. The main problem here is that even though these oils are known to be nature's antibiotics and have antifungal or antibacterial properties, but the fungus are underneath the nails and the oils can't permeate into the nail to reach the nail bed to get rid of the fungus within.

7. Using Household Cleaning And Disinfectant Solutions Is Effective
There are some even suggested the use of Listerine and hydrogen peroxide. There are those who claim that it works for them and others not. What you might not have realise is the further damage it can do to the already weak nails and skin trying to heal remain questionable. For hydrogen peroxide, it has many uses including a disinfectant, bleaching agent and even used as a component in rocket propellants. Would you want to bet your own health by using these chemicals to treat your toenail fungus infection? Moreover, these solutions have the same problem of not being able to effectively penetrate into the nail bed to solve the problem entirely.
