Toenail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is a relatively common condition that disfigures and sometimes destroys the nail. It is caused by certain organisms that live in the nails and are known as dermatophytes. These are microscopic organisms which do not contain chlorophyll, and can survive only if they use instrumental material (skin or nail) as food. The dermatophytes germinate in warm and humid areas of the skin. They penetrate the stratum corneum to find food and they grow and spread laterally across the hair and nails. The factors that accelerate the development of fungal infections include increased temperature (heat), increased moisture, improper ventilation of the feet and poor hygiene. Fungus can also be transmitted when walking barefoot, when using other people's shoes or socks and through pedicure. It seems that toenail fungal infections are also more frequent during winter.
Symptoms:
The main symptoms are itching, redness and cracking in the skin between the nails. The infected nails become thick (hyperplasia), with a rather smooth surface, and there is also a change in color (brown-gray).
How To Get Rid Of Toenail Fungus Naturally:
- You should always wash your feet thoroughly and wipe them with a towel. Make sure they are dry at all times, even if you need to use a hair dryer. You should also keep your feet very clean, and always wear clean socks and shoes. Preferably, you should wear socks made of cotton silk or wool. These socks can absorb moisture. On the contrary, you should avoid materials that trap the moisture, especially if you are very active and your feet sweat easily.
- Change your diet: nutrition can play a very vital role in curing this condition. Try to include more probiotics (contained in yogurt and kefir) in your diet. You should also avoid sugar, dairy products and vinegar. Foods like sugar can contribute to the spread of the infection, because fungus feeds on sugar. Olive oil is also a great internal anti-fungal remedy. A healthy nutrition that contains a lot of fruits and vegetables, won't heal toenail fungus directly, but it can boost your immune system and help your body get rid of the infection.
- Use a mixture of tea tree oil and lavender oil: Mix equal amount of tea tree oil and lavender oil and dab it under the toenail by using a swab. Try to repeat the process at least 2 or 3 times a day. Tea tree oil has antibiotic properties and lavender oil can help you fight the infection. This combination of these oils is very potent and can help you treat even severe cases of onychomycosis.
